Approved Land Use Strategy > Appendix A
Appendix A:
Summary of Land Use Areas and Area-Specific Policies
All Crown lands in the Strategy planning area have been assigned to the land use categories outlined in Section 7.0. This appendix provides information and management direction for all the land use areas, except those that have been assigned to the General Use Designation.
The rationale for the division of the planning area into the smaller areas is based on the premise that the activity or mix of activities in one area is significantly different from that in adjacent areas, or is carried out under different conditions.
Because the Strategy covers a very large area, in some cases the boundaries of the designations and enhanced management areas are relatively general, and will be subject to refinement as they are mapped at finer scales. This more detailed mapping may result in changes in the size of areas.
The Appendix provides the following seven types of information or direction for each area:
ID
The ID letters and numbers reference the land use areas that are shown on the Land Use Strategy map.
The first letter identifies the land use category, as follows:
General Use Area G
A specific number has been assigned to each individual land use area. The area numbers have been assigned as follows:
Great Lakes - St. Lawrence:
1 - 999
Boreal East:
1000 - 1999
Boreal West:
2000 - 2999
For Enhanced Management Areas, a specific category is identified after the number. Only the first five categories have been applied in the Land Use Strategy; the other two categories could be applied in subsequent planning.
natural heritage n
recreation r
remote access a
fish and wildlife w
Great Lakes coastal area g
resource-based tourism t
intensive forestry I
Name
The names that have been assigned are working names and may be changed.
Area
Area in hectares (a hectare is 2.47 acres). These areas are based on regional scale mapping and are subject to revision as the detailed boundaries for land use areas are developed.
Land Use
This identifies which of the five main land uses the area has been assigned to, and in the case of provincial parks and conservation reserves it identifies areas that are additions to existing parks or reserves.
Category
The category identifies the proposed park classification for provincial parks, and the specific type of Enhanced Management Area. Categories are not shown for Conservation Reserves and Forest Reserves .
Area Description
This section highlights the values that resulted in the identification of the area, and any other major values or uses that may affect management.
Land Use Intent
The land use intent section is intended to provide direction on key land use and resource management questions, where this direction is not fully provided by the general policies for the designation or Enhanced Management Area. In some cases, the intent section also provides some explanation on matters such as the boundaries of the area, or the process that will be used to confirm boundaries. In cases where this section is blank, the general policies for the designation or EMA will apply.
Additional operational and development guidelines will be provided through subsequent resource management or operational planning.
