Ontario’s Crown Land Use Atlas

Public Involvement

The land use amendment process for the Atlas is intended to be transparent and accessible to the public. The public can participate in the land use amendment process by:

  1. Reviewing and Commenting on an Amendment Proposal

  2. Land use amendments classified as minor and major are subject to public review and are posted on the Internet on Ontario's Environmental Registry. Dates of the public review period are included on each Environmental Registry posting. Anyone can submit comments on these proposals. All comments will be considered by MNR if they are: a) submitted in writing, b) reference the Environmental Registry, and c) are received by the contact person within the specified review period. In addition to the Environmental Registry posting, MNR may involve the public in its decision-making through other means such as mail-outs, surveys, open houses, or by forming committees. All land use amendment proposals and decisions are posted on the Internet on the Crown Land Use Policy Atlas.

  3. Requesting an Amendment

  4. Generally amendments are initiated by MNR, however from time to time another public agency, group or individual may be aware of new relevant information, changing resource conditions or other circumstances for which an amendment may be appropriate.

For more information on requesting an amendment click here.

An amendment request must be made in writing (i.e., letter or email) and must include the following:

    • Requestor's contact information
    • A brief description of the proposed land use amendment
    • The rationale for the amendment and a discussion of its significance and implications

An amendment request can be sent to the MNR district office that is responsible for the area affected by the proposed amendment. From the district office, the request will be forwarded to the appropriate Ontario Parks Zone office if it involves a provincial park.

After a request for a land use amendment has been submitted, MNR will review the request in the context of existing legislation, policies and local direction, and in consideration of similar requests that are anticipated or have been made in the past by another party. The requestor will be contacted by the MNR District office or Ontario Parks Zone office for more information if necessary, and to advise on whether the amendment will proceed. If the land use amendment proposal is accepted, MNR will complete the necessary paperwork (with assistance from the requestor if necessary) and carry out public consultation if required.

For further information on how to participate in the land use amendment process, please contact your local MNR District Office.

Under the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act, no personal information will be made publicly available.
