Ontario’s Crown Land Use Atlas

Sources of Mapping Information

Mapping information stored in Ontario’s Land Information Warehouse is used to produce maps in the Crown Land Use Policy Atlas (the Atlas). The Land Information Warehouse has frequently scheduled updates therefore mapping information in the Atlas will always be quite current.

Mapped locations for regulated areas (i.e., provincial parks, conservation reserves, wilderness areas, Crown game preserves) are the best geographical representation that current technology permits. These are subject to change as amendments and technological improvements are made. For recommended protected areas and other areas that are not regulated (i.e., enhanced management areas, forest reserves, general use areas, other overlay areas), the boundaries are based on the best interpretation of the intended boundary.

The Atlas also shows lands not subject to provincial policy such as national parks, Indian reserves and large areas of private land. Information for federal lands comes from federal government data. The mapping of private land is not based on detailed survey information and is intended to give only an impression of the general distribution of private land.

Some mapped information has been provided by sources outside MNR and the level of accuracy may vary. Efforts will be made in the future to increase the accuracy of land use area information available through the Atlas.

The map information in the Atlas cannot be used to precisely identify the exact on-the-ground location of the features shown and should be used with caution in this respect. The mapping depicts land use areas with as much accuracy as possible using digital information from a variety of sources.
