Ontario’s Crown Land Use Atlas

About the Land Use Amendment Index

Background

As part of the Ministry's commitment to transparency and accountability, amendments must be accessible to the public. To facilitate public review, amendments are posted on the Ontario’s Crown Land Use Policy Atlas Internet site through the Land Use Amendment Index (the Index). The Index organizes individual amendments into a table format that allows the public access to the amendment information.

Land Use Amendment Form

Amendments are processed as a package by MNR centred on a Land Use Amendment Form. The form provides an overview of the amendment including rationale, land use area(s) affected, need for the amendment, analysis, public consultation highlights, and documentation of decisions. The form posted on the Index contains links to affected policy reports, and/or land use amendment maps and other supporting documents.

Land Use Amendment Index Structure

The Index is separated into two sections with individual amendments listed by their unique amendment tracking number and posting/decision date. The tracking number links to land use amendment form.

1) Proposed Amendments

When an amendment classified as minor or major has been received, it is initially posted in the Proposed Amendments section.

2) Completed Amendments

When a decision has been reached, amendments are posted in the Completed Amendments section. Approved administrative amendments are only posted in the Completed Amendments section.

Land Use Amendment Index Coverage

Currently, the Atlas does not cover all of Ontario. The Atlas includes land use direction and mapping information for Crown lands in central and mid-northern Ontario (see Geographic Extent). However, the amendment process is used to revise policy and/or boundaries of all land use areas in Ontario. Because the public must be given the opportunity to review all amendments for the entire province, the Index contains amendments for both inside and outside the Atlas' area of coverage. Over time, the Atlas will be expanded to include all Crown lands in Ontario. Until then, the Index will identify amendments that are outside the Atlas' coverage area.
